What does a split air conditioner cost? Purchase, installation and running costs

My name is Stefan Klammer and I am the founder of Climate King. Since 2018 I have worked with air conditioning every day, and the question I get asked most is actually very simple. What does a split air conditioner really cost? Not only the unit itself, but also the installation and what you pay in electricity each month. In this article I cover all three, with real figures from our own CK 25, CK 35 and CK 50 models.

What is a split air conditioner exactly?

A split air conditioner consists of two parts. An indoor unit that you mount on the wall and an outdoor unit that hangs outside. The two are connected by a refrigerant line, which allows heat to be moved inside or outside. That is how you cool your home in summer, and with a heat pump you can also heat in winter. All our single split models work this way, with R32 refrigerant and built-in WiFi control.

What does a split air conditioner cost to buy?

Let me simply start with the prices. At Climate King we offer three single split wall models, each suited to a different room size.

CK 25 WMIU/WMOU

from 779 euro

Cooling capacity of 2.60 kW and heating up to 2.61 kW. Suited to bedrooms and smaller living rooms.

CK 35 WMIU/WMOU

from 799 euro

With 3.50 kW of cooling capacity, our most chosen mid-range unit, perfect for an average living room or home office.

CK 50 WMIU/WMOU

from 999 euro

Our most powerful model at 5.10 kW, intended for larger spaces such as a spacious living room or a small commercial unit.

All three come with 5 years of factory warranty as standard, and every unit is supplied with an indoor unit, an outdoor unit, an infrared remote control and the required mounting materials.

Which model suits your room?

To help you choose, we use three insulation levels per model. In a well insulated room the CK 25 cools up to 30 square metres, the CK 35 up to 42 square metres and the CK 50 up to 61 square metres. If your home is less well insulated, work with somewhat smaller areas.

Not sure which capacity fits your room? Get in touch with us, because a unit that is too small has to run at full power constantly, and that ends up costing you more electricity than a well chosen model.

What does installing a split air conditioner cost?

I want to be completely honest about this, because it is exactly where many people have the wrong expectations. Climate King sells the units, but we do not install them ourselves. A split air conditioner works with R32 refrigerant, and under the European F-gas regulation only a BRL200 certified technician or a BRL100 certified company may connect this kind of system. That is why we work with a network of certified installation partners who take care of the installation for you, and they set a separate price based on your situation.

So what does installation cost on average in the Netherlands? Market research by comparison sites shows that a split air conditioner including installation generally falls between 1,600 and 3,200 euro, depending on the capacity and the complexity of the job. This is a general market average and not a Climate King price, so always request a quote from an installer in your region before making a final decision.

Can you install a split air conditioner yourself? I understand the question, because it would of course be cheaper. But I strongly advise against it, and in fact it is not simply allowed. Connecting refrigerant lines and working with refrigerant is legally reserved for certified professionals. If you do it yourself, you risk not only a leak or an incorrectly placed system, but also fines and the loss of your warranty.

How much electricity does a split air conditioner use?

Thanks to inverter technology a split air conditioner adjusts its output automatically, which means it uses less electricity than a system that keeps switching fully on and off. Our models have a SEER value of 6.10 for cooling and a SCOP value of 5.10 for heating, which works out at energy label A++ for cooling.

To give you an idea of what that means in practice, I have made a sample calculation based on the current average electricity price in the Netherlands of roughly 0.28 euro per kWh (September 2026). This is purely an indication, because your own energy contract and usage determine the final cost.

CK 25

0.82 kW when cooling

about 23 cents per hour

CK 35

1.13 kW when cooling

about 32 cents per hour

CK 50

1.58 kW when cooling

about 44 cents per hour

When heating, these amounts are slightly lower, because the power draw there is a little below this.

Frequently asked questions about split air conditioner costs

What does a split air conditioner cost including installation?

The unit itself you buy from us from 779 euro. A certified partner arranges the installation separately, and in the Netherlands that is on average between 1,600 and 3,200 euro, depending on the model and the situation.

How much electricity does a split air conditioner use per hour?

That depends on the model and on whether you are cooling or heating. With our CK 25 you can count on about 23 cents per hour when cooling, with the CK 35 about 32 cents and with the CK 50 about 44 cents, based on the current average electricity price.

Is a split air conditioner with a heat pump worth it?

Yes, because you use the same unit all year round. In summer you cool, in winter you heat efficiently with a heat pump, without needing a separate heating appliance.

What capacity do I need for my room?

For a well insulated bedroom up to 30 square metres the CK 25 is enough. For an average living room up to 42 square metres you choose the CK 35, and for larger spaces up to 61 square metres the CK 50.

Does every Climate King split air conditioner have WiFi control?

Yes, WiFi control comes as standard on all our single split models, so you can operate it from your smartphone or tablet.

Can you install a split air conditioner yourself?

I advise against it. Working with R32 refrigerant is legally reserved for certified technicians. That is why we connect you with an approved installation partner from our network.
